The complaint didn't match the test
Last fall I walked into a small food-bank kitchen and smelled damp cardboard before I saw it. A manager had bought a Midea 22-pint smart dehumidifier for a storage room at the back. The app was showing 46% humidity. The room felt like 70-something. My first thought was easy: we shipped a bad unit.
That's not a throwaway insult. On the quality side of Midea's cold/heat business, I review roughly 180 units a year—maybe closer to 200 if I count samples. I'd already checked that same model in a Q1 2024 audit and it had passed every test. So I didn't open the box again. I walked the building instead.
The room had three other opinions
Before I got to the storage room, I passed a plumber finishing a hot water heater replacement near me. I also passed a Manitowoc ice machine in a hallway alcove, and I could hear someone in the kitchen explaining how to make a double boiler to a newer cook. Three unrelated jobs, right? Not exactly.
The plumber had a real job to finish, and the ice machine wasn't malfunctioning. The cook also wasn't doing anything wrong, technically. But all three were changing the air in that building. A water heater in a tight closet gives off heat while it recharges. An air-cooled ice machine makes ice on one side and pushes warm air out the other. And a double boiler made from a bowl over a pot of water can act like a small steam generator if the water is boiling too hard.
This is where I get careful about spec-sheet-only thinking. It's tempting to think a 22-pint dehumidifier removes 22 pints all day, everywhere. That oversimplification ignores what's right next to the machine. The pint rating is based on the DOE test procedure in 10 CFR Part 430, not on a real room where a water heater, an ice machine, and a steaming double boiler are all competing with the dehumidifier.
I don't have hard data on how many field complaints turn out to be building conditions instead of product conditions. Based on the site checks I've done, my sense is that it's most of them. The Midea 22-pint smart dehumidifier wasn't lying; its sensor was reading the air immediately around it. The unit was tucked behind a shelf, so the damp corner near the back door never got enough air movement. The machine was satisfied while the cardboard a few meters away wasn't.
What worked wasn't a second unit
I should add that I'm not against adding more equipment. Earlier that week I reviewed the Midea Duo 10 in our portable comfort line and it's another solid product. But putting it in that room wouldn't have fixed the root problem. A portable comfort unit handles the air that reaches its intake, same as the dehumidifier. The room needed less competing heat and moisture, not more machines.
So we did three boring things. First, we moved the dehumidifier into a more open spot. Second, we switched it from bucket mode to continuous drain using the hose that's already in the box. Third, I suggested lowering the heat under that double-boiler station. The cook had looked up how to make a double boiler and done the standard first pass: bowl over a pot of water set to a hard boil. A real double boiler uses simmering water, not a rolling boil. Once the water was turned down, the steam load dropped a lot.
By the next morning the storage room was holding at about 52% humidity, and the damp cardboard smell was gone. The customer kept the dehumidifier. Six weeks later they added a second Midea 22-pint smart dehumidifier only because they opened another storage area on the other side of the building.
The boundary lesson
I also left respecting the plumber's boundary. He didn't pretend to be the ice machine tech, and I didn't pretend to be him. The vendor who tells you when something is outside their lane is usually the one you want on the job. That's the standard I try to hold at Midea too: sell the right cold/heat product for the right problem, then tell the customer what the product won't do.
If you need a dehumidifier for a genuine damp space, the Midea 22-pint smart dehumidifier is worth a close look. Just don't ask it to fix heat, humidity, airflow, and steam sources all by itself. No dehumidifier can do that, and the ones that claim to usually aren't being honest about the boundary.
